JFK Airport is New York. It's one of world's largest and busiest airports.
On a calm spring afternoon at terminal 8, an old lady was waiting for her pet at the baggage claim area.
She seemed worried.
Is something about to happen?
"What's taking my girl so long to come out?"
The airport staff, a big cheerful woman, asked her back.
"Is your pet a dog?"
"A dog? You must be joking. I hate dogs. They bark too much.
My Shirley is a beautiful snake with very beautiful stripes, indeed."
"Oh, I see."
She had a strange look on her face, but the old lady didn't notice.
She just kept watching the baggage conveyor belt.
"That's it! That yellow pet cage over there."
But at that moment, the pet cage started to shake.
"I wonder what's wrong."
Suddenly, the lid of the pat cage opened.
"Oh my! It's a little dog!"
Yes, my friends, it was a dog that popped out from the yellow pet cage.
He was small and white with a couple of dark brown spots.
Not the type you would find in a fancy pet shop, but seemed very likable, full of life and spirit.
This is Charo, the hero of our story.
"Help! Somebody! There's a dog in my pet cage.
Shirley! Shirley, my dear girl! Where are you? Are you all right?"
The old lady was almost shrieking.
"What in the world is happening?"
In the middle of the confusion, Charo managed to slip away and started run.
Big men in uniforms caught sight and started chasing.
"Hey! Wait you, Doggy!"
Charo had no idea what was going on.
Just then, he found some space between a mountain of bags.
He jumped this hight to height there.
The men ran ahead, not knowing that they just passed by the dog they were running after.
"Hey, what's the matter? Are you in trouble?"
Charo heard a voice from somewhere about him.
He looked up, and found a lady dog peeking from inside of pet cage.
She was stacked up on the pile of luggage.
"えっと... Y, yes. Help, please."
"Sure, but first tell me what's wrong."
"I ... I don't know. I was ... in the airplane ... in the dog cage, but suddenly, I'm here. What happened? I want to know."
Actually, Charo have come to the United States on the vacation trip with his owner Shota and his father.
But something went wrong.
At that very moment, Shota and his father will be on their airplane heading back home.
On the other hand, Charo found himself alone in the big, big airport.
"Where were you supposed to go?"
"にっぽん！ To ... to Japan ... with Shota. He loves me."
"Well, to me, it sounds like there was a big mix-up.
Hey, you are completely lost."
Charo didn't quite understand what the lady dog was saying.
"This is New York, little doggy. And doggies aren't allowed on airplanes just by themselves. Poor thing. You'll never get back to Japan."
Charo was shocked.
He thought of Shota, his loving owner, and his mind went blank.
"どうしよう。 What should I do?"
"I really don't know. There's nothing I can do for you."
"そ、そんな。 Please don't say that."
Charo was about to cry.
The guards came back again, still looking for Charo.
The lady dog lowered her voice.
"It's dangerous here. You'd better run. There should be some kind of a car outside. Jump into one of them, and you'll be safe. At least, safer than this place."
"Okay. Thank you. ありがとう。"
Charo dashed out of the airport building.
He was lucky.
He saw small pick-up truck was just about to leave.
He hopped on to the back of the pick-up as it speeded up.
After a while, Charo was able to see the Manhattan's skyscrapers.
The row of really tall buildings was glowing dark against the beautiful sunset.
Charo was amazed. The city was so big.
And this was the beginning of Charo's wonderful adventures.
