The day after the party, Charo arrived at Louisa and Aimee's place.
He went through the cat door and walked forward.
"Hello, Louisa. It's Charo. Thank you for inviting me."
"Welcome, Charo. Come on in.
The room was small but very cozy.
In front of the pet sofa, there was a beautifully woven orient rug.
Louisa was sitting there.
"Is this your room?"
"This is our living room. I stay here most of the time. Aimee is in the attic now."
"Is it all right for me to be here?
"Yes, Aimee rarely comes out when she's working. Why don't you sit down and make yourself comfortable?"
Charo went closer to Louisa, and sat on the nice soft rug.
"So tell me. How is Margherita? I'm sure she hasn't changed a bit."
"She sometimes sings songs for us. We go shopping together, too."
"Ah, that's her! No doubt about it."
"Louisa... Why did you and Aimee come to Chicago?"
Louisa silently took out some cards from under the sofa.
They were alphabet cards.
She spread them out and made the word "CHICAGO".
"Cards... Is that why you came here?"
"Uh-huh. These cards told us to, so we did. And right after we settled in, Aimee's novel suddenly became a best-seller."
"ふーん。How did you get your powers?"
Louisa took a deep breath, and started her story.
"Well, we used to be very poor. We didn't even have enough money to buy food. Still, Aimee kept me. Never gave up on me, even though I was very weak."
"Aimee saved you. Same with me and Shota."
"Really? Well, one day, there was only one dollar left in Aimee's pocket.
She must have been very hungry, too.
But instead of her own food, she bought me some milk."
"Yes. She's very big-hearted. Tomorrow is another day. That's her favorite phrase."
"Tomorrow is another day."
"I will never forget the silky white milk being poured into my milk saucer.
I licked it... and that was when something came over me."
"Something... came over you?"
"What, I have no idea, but since then I see things. I can also tell the future through my cards."
"Aimee loves me and saved me. I don't know what my powers are, but I do know where they came from. They came from her."
Just then, Aimee's footsteps. Charo hid under the sofa.
"Louisa, are you there?"
"My new piece of work, it might take a bit longer. I thought I should put out your food while I can."
Aimee added some cat food to Louisa's bowl and checked on the water.
After stroking her for a while she went back to the attic.
"Writing... That must be difficult."
"But she sure likes it. And whenever she needs it, I'm always ready to use my cards. Maybe next year, we won't be here in Chicago anymore. Who knows?"
"You love her."
Charo could see how deeply Louisa loved Aimee.
That made him a bit uneasy.
Would she use her powers for anybody else than Aimee.
"You said you have a dream. Do you want me to see how it'll turn out?"
"Thank you, Louisa."
"You're welcome. Now, let me look into your eyes."
It was an intense moment.
Will Charo be able to go back to Japan?
What would Louisa say?
Charo was a bit scared, but was also eager to know.
