The sausages were rather heavy for Charo but he dragged them carefully back to the nest.
They were plump and juicy and would surely make Dread feel better.
Maybe they would even cure him.
"Dread! I'm back! Look. All these sausages, I got them from Rosa."
"She gave all this to you."
"Yes. So, Dread, let's eat!"
Dread remained silent.
Then with a frown,
"Charo... don't you remember? I told you. Eat whenever you can, whatever you can."
"You're hungry, right?"
"I'm hungry, but..."
"Then, eat. These sausages are yours. Don't even think of sharing them with others."
"I want to eat with you. If you are not eating, I'm not eating."
"Being stubborn won't get you anywhere."
"Let's split. Half and half. That's the only way."
Dread was moved by how much the pup thought of him.
Still he had to teach Charo how to survive in this harsh city.
"Listen, Charo. You lose when you give, you win when you take. That's how it is with us stray dogs. Tough and simple."
"If you get hold of food, keep it to yourself, otherwise you'll be a dead dog, long before you get to anywhere. Japan? No way! Now, eat."
Charo was sad and disappointed.
He was so looking forward to eating the delicious sausages with Dread.
"Then... I'm not eating anything."
"You heard me. I'm not eating anything!"
"Humph. Stubbornly kid."
For the rest of the day, neither of the two dogs dared to even go close to the sausages.
Night came, with the stomach's growling.
Morning arrived, with their stomachs still growling.
"Mamma mia! Oh, delicious! It's a bit too early for Thanksgiving, but it sure is an occasion to be thankful."
Charo woke up, and couldn't believe his eyes.
It was the funny bird, Sally.
He and his friends had found the sausages and were eagerly feasting on them!
"No! What are you doing? Those sausages are ours!"
Charo dashed into the birds. They all flew away, except Sally.
"Oh, no. Sally... what have you done? These were for Dread... and me... to eat later... together."
"Well, they were starting to go bad. I saved them from being wasted."
Charo looked around. He was shocked.
The sausages seemed to be all gone.
"Um... looking for this? Here. And, uh... sorry about this whole thing."
Sally pushed over the one sausage left from behind him and flew away.
Charo wanted to cry but he knew he shouldn't.
"Now, you understand, don't you? Eat whenever you can. Otherwise, you end up like this."
Charo picked up the sausage and brought it to Dread.
"What are you...?"
"Let's each eat half."
"I want you to eat with me. I want you to stay strong. Please eat with me."
With that, Charo burst into tears.
Dread couldn't stand to let down this little puppy any more.
"Okay, Charo. You win. You eat first. I'll eat the rest."
"Humph. Now, stop crying and eat."
Charo bit into his share of sausage. It tasted so good.
Needless to say Dread enjoyed his share, too.
But he didn't want Charo to see that he was about to cry, so he quietly looked away.
