Dread was not getting any better and Charo would share whatever food he was able to get.
Dread seemed to be getting weaker and weaker.
Charo was very worried.
One morning, the sound of fire engines and police cars came roaring from nearby.
"I wonder what's happening."
"Maybe a fire. Look, right there. See the black smoke? Probably from that old building behind the warehouse."
"What should we do?"
"Stay here. I'll go and see."
"I'm going, too."
"No. It might be dangerous. Don't move."
Dread walked slowly into the alley.
Charo looked at the smoke rising from beyond the buildings.
He grew more and more uneasy, until finally, he ran from the nest to look for Dread, and bumped into... Sirius.
"Charo, what are you doing here?"
"How is the fire? Do you know?"
"It started in one of those old buildings. We're trying to keep it from spreading.
You'd better stay away."
"But I'm worried about Dread. Our nest is very close, so he went to make sure things are okay."
"The fire has been contained inside the building. As long as he keeps his distance, he should be safe."
At that moment, the two saw Catherine walk past the burning building.
The raging flames were sprouting from the windows. It looked very dangerous.
"Sirius! Did you make sure nobody is around? Is the area clear?"
"Okay, stay right there and I'll be with you in a minute."
But then, a big chunk of bricks came loose and started to fall.
It was right above Catherine, but she didn't notice.
"Catherine! Watch out!"
Sirius was just about to jump forward when a big heavy shadow knocked her out of the way.
The big chunk of stone barely missed them.
It was a frightening moment.
Sirius dashed over, so did a fireman.
She had scratches and bruises here and there but she seemed okay.
"Relax, Sirius. No damage done. I'm fine."
"Are you hurt?"
"I don't think so, but... uh! I might have sprained my ankle."
"Okay. We'd better get you to the hospital. Here, can you stand up?"
"Yes. Thank you. Sirius, come with me."
Charo just stood there without being able to move.
Then a shadow weakly rose up from behind the fallen chunk.
It was Dread. He was bleeding.
"Dread, it was you who saved Catherine!"
"I thought I told you not to come. What are you doing here?"
Big flames were shooting from the windows again.
Dread instantly took Charo in his mouth and ran.
It was not until he got to a small opening far enough from the fire that he let Charo down.
"Dread... you're bleeding. Are you all right?"
"What about you? You are not hurt, are you?"
"No, I'm okay. Thank you, Dread.
They stayed there for a while watching the fire.
Meanwhile, Catherine was stroking Sirius gently in the ambulance.
"Thank you, Sirius, for saving my life. You are so brave."
But of course, Sirius was not really happy.
It was Dread who had saved Catherine, not he'd.
He had hesitated for a split second and that was it.
He had given way to Dread, a fact that he would never want to admit.
